How can I fix registry, driver, and folder errors with Windows XP?

My system is running extremely slow and sluggish. I tried several of the tips and tricks listed in “PC Magazine’s” online articles (ie. msconfig, regedit, etc), but only obtained minimal results without crashing the system entirely (Restore!) or none of my apps working. Conversely, I downloaded a few free diagnostic tools off the internet and ran them, only to discover that I have in the neighborhood of 600-800 file, registry, shortcut, driver, and folder errors, but that the software wouldn’t fix anything unless I bought the “Full version” (Cheapest price=$39.95!). I need help, and while I’m SLIGHTLY techno-illiterate, I’m EXTREMELY willing and able to learn. Please …?
